SLTCFI Holds Educational Campaign on Philippine Jury System
LEGAZPI CITY (1/25/10) - In a quest to create awareness among the Filipino youth about the importance of an effective and impartial judiciary system, Southern Luzon Technological College Foundation, Inc. (SLTCFI) in cooperation with Kamalayan sa Katarungan ng Lahing Kayumanggi, Inc. (KKK), held a series of orientation campaign on the Philippine Jury System. The first leg of the symposium for SLTFCI students and teachers started last January 22, 2010 at Imperial Building, Capantawan, Legazpi City.
With the theme “Kamalayan ng Lahing Kayumanggi,” the symposium which was headed by Mr. Timoteo Sapurco of London-based Philippine Jury Campaign International (PJCI) centered on introducing the importance of judicial restructuring, specifically the implementation of Trial-By-Jury format in our country’s judicial system. It also educated the participants on the proper administration of justice and on the promotion of respect and equality among Filipinos.
To clearly illustrate the Trial-By-Jury system, the movie 12 Angry Men was shown to the attendees. The film illustrated the power of the Trial-By-Jury system as a medium in attaining a fair trial on court proceedings.
The SL Pilar and SL Pio Duran were also among the SLTCFI branches that were given the privilege to know more about this cause. Students and faculty members enthusiastically listened to the presentation and joined in the discussions.”We are glad to have been given the chance to participate in the event as that provided us with a unique opportunity to gain insight into one of the effective means to augment the judiciary system in our country“, said Salve Millabas, a Computer Programming 2nd year student of SLTCFI Pilar.
PJCI Executive Director Amy Balliao urged the participants to be involved in the advocacy for a better judicial system in the country. She, along with other speakers, Miguel Relente (KKK President), Lynn Mañalac (one of the KKK Board of Directors) and Larne Gayatgay (volunteer from Medline International Training Institute) also encouraged the attendees to be more committed and be instrumental in the pursuit for an improved structure of justice in the country.
The said affair also significantly served as an eye-opener for the participants to the fact that enhancing the country’s present judicial landscape will not be a far-fetched initiative even amidst the present issues and controversies surrounding our judiciary system, if everyone will be involved even in the littlest way possible.
Philippine Jury Campaign International (PJCI) and Kamalayan sa Katarungan ng Lahing Kayumanggi, Inc. (KKK) are non-government organizations, which aspire to see the Filipino nation experience the true essence of justice through an effective and impartial judiciary system whereby ordinary citizens are given significant participation in a Trial-by-Jury System.
